Since you’re wearing a helmet, you can’t see so great. So when your balloon is popped you really can’t tell. Which is why the “refs” of the event have these giant poles, which they have to slam against your helmet to tell you that you’re done.
It may sound painful, but you don’t actually feel much when they do it. Either it’s because you’re wearing solid steel on your head, or it’s because they’re that good. Either way, it showed up in some of the pictures and I had to think up a way to use it. This is where “Dave the dirty fighter” came into play.
Before this, I had only tried to incorporate motion and “comic action / graphics” into photos a very small amount. It’s a tricky bit, and I always think the action in the photo is usually enough. However, in this case, I had to make it apparent what was happening. Enter the motion blur, the “whack” strike colors, and the sound effect.
After I did it, I realized it looked pretty cool. And so now I’m thinking of other ways to incorporate it into future comics.
